    The city of Westlake is close to hitting the jackpot when it comes to casino revenue. Last year, 23-million dollars from the three local casinos and Delta Downs slots was pooled and then distributed by the Calcasieu Parish Gaming Revenue District. The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury and City of Lake Charles get the most, about 10-million dollars apiece. Sulphur, DeQuincy, Vinton and Iowa take a smaller cut based on population.     A Calcasieu Parish initiative is aiming to give nonviolent offenders a second chance by expunging convictions and arrests made within the parish at a low cost. 

    It's called the "Fresh Start Initiative" and it's a collaborative effort between the DA's office, the Southwest Louisiana Law Center and other organizations.

    "Christian's Cajun Adventures" continued Friday as KPLC's Christian Piekos came face-to-face with some baby alligators. Christian visited Gator Chateau, an organization in Jennings that rescues both baby and mature alligators. Gator Chateau fosters the gators until they are able to be released back into their natural habitat. From June through September, Gator Chateau feeds its gators at 3:30 p.m. It's free for the public to watch the feedings.

    "The things you're worried about once you see a patient is, what were they shot with, is the bullet still in the patient, and do you have any vascular injury to deal with," said Cascio.

    Allen Parish Sheriff's deputies are investigating the possible drowning of a child in the Calcasieu River Sunday evening.

    The 12-year-old child tried to swim across the river west of Oberlin, went into distress, and went under the water at around 3:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon, said Allen Parish Sheriff Doug Hebert.

    As part of Sasol's expansion projects, a few years ago the industry giant offered residents of Mossville a way out since the project was growing so close to their homes. It was called the "voluntary property purchase program" and Sasol offered residents money to move. This week, the Imperial Calcasieu Museum opened a new exhibit, funded by Sasol, honoring the Mossville community.

    A New Iberia man was sentenced to 33 months in prison for sending threatening letters to government agencies across South Louisiana, including the governor’s office and a U.S. post office in Lake Charles, Acting U.S. Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook announced Friday. Kyle Dore, 33, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Donald E. Walter on five counts of mailing threatening communications and four counts of false information and hoaxes.

    Seven-year-old Gage Meche is out of the hospital and back home, which to his parents is truly a miracle after the first-grader was shot in the abdomen at Moss Bluff Elementary on May 15. Trinity and Krista Meche are emotional about that day- and the heart-stopping phone calls they received. "I was in Walmart which is right across the street from the school, when I got the phone call," Krista said. "That was probably the most terrifying thing ever."

    Results of some tests in the homicide investigation of Willow Renteria-Molina, 2, have returned from the lab.  The Vernon Parish girl was reported missing in May of 2016. Her body was found in Beauregard Parish just a few days after search crews began scouring the woods. While investigators have named a primary suspect in her death, no charges have been filed in relation to her killing. After over a year since her death, detectives have received some lab results.

    Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents cited three Jennings men for alleged alligator and frog violations on June 3 in Jeff Davis Parish, according to LDWF.

    Agents cited Rhett Guidry, 24, Dodie Bouley, 19, and Kyle Thibodaux, 23, for taking alligators during a closed season, hunting from a moving vehicle, hunting from a public road and taking frogs using illegal methods.

    A Lake Charles man was arrested on a DWI fourth offense charge after allegedly causing a three-vehicle crash and fleeing the scene early this morning.

    Just before 4 a.m. Sunday, June 4, Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a three-vehicle crash on U.S. Hwy 90 near Goodman Lane east of Lake Charles in Calcasieu Parish, said Sgt. James Anderson, State Police spokesman.

    It's no secret that the shoreline off Cameron Parish is receding at unprecedented rates. The Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge is working tirelessly to rebuild the lost shoreline. 

    "I see what's at stake of being lost," said Scooter Trosclair, biologist program manager at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge. "I can list so many events that will take place if this shoreline erosion isn't prevented or slowed down."

    The Children's Museum on Broad Street in Lake Charles is looking to relocate. 

    Mayor Randy Roach said the museum recently approached the city about relocating to the lakefront. A joint agreement was drafted that would allow the museum to begin developing a plan for its relocation on the corner of Gill Street and Lakeshore Drive, which would be across from Millennium Park.

    The Sulphur Police Department has arrested two suspects in a high-speed pursuit on I-10 in Sulphur Wednesday afternoon.

    On Wednesday, May 31,  Sulphur Police officer patrolling I-10 saw a Louisiana-registered rental vehicle make several traffic violations as it traveled eastbound near Sulphur. At around 1:35 p.m. the officer attempted to pull over the vehicle, said Mel Estess, spokesman for the Sulphur Police Department.

    The U.S. Department of Energy approved Delfin LNG's application to build a floating offshore export facility just off the Cameron coast Thursday.

    With assistance from the public, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office detectives have identified a suspect in the early morning robbery of a cash register drawer from a Moss Bluff convenience store, said CPSO spokesperson Kim Myers.

    CPSO has identified the suspect as Ryan K. Rashall, 31, of Moss Bluff.

    2016 was a rough year for rice producers throughout the country and the state, and especially here in Southwest Louisiana, with major flooding crippling farms.

    "We've had depressed prices. Add to that the flood we had in 2016. So the last couple of years have been a challenge and a struggle for our rice producers," said Kurt Guidry, an economist with the LSU AgCenter.

    A group of boys are taking their love for baseball off the field and into the backyard. And no, this isn't a scene out of the 1993 classic "The Sandlot." It’s happening right here in Lake Charles.

    At the David household, there's something special going on in the backyard.

    “One day in the backyard we came out here and decided to start playing around,” said Dylan David, who started a Wiffle ball league with his friends.

    Bolton Ford held its third annual car and truck show benefiting the Give A Wish foundation on Saturday. Give A Wish announced they would be sending Kenzie Noelle Johnson to Disney World. They also gave Johnson her own set of wheels: a fun-size pink Ford Mustang. Paula Livingston, the director of Give A Wish, said it takes thousands of dollars for the organization to make dreams a reality.

    A massive new $200 million housing project planned in Calcasieu Parish was announced Thursday night. The Sugarcane Townes will be located near Iowa, and the development will bring in 600 new homes.

    Sharel Hebert, a realtor at Century 21 in Lake Charles, said the planned housing development is a much-needed addition to the housing market in Calcasieu Parish.

    Moss Bluff Elementary School shooting victim Gage Meche was checked into the hospital for more surgery on Thursday, a family spokesman said.     It's been almost five months since the death of Sgt. Tracy Morgan, who served as a crisis negotiator for Louisiana State Police for more than 20 years. 

    Morgan died in January after collapsing from a heart attack while on duty. Morgan was a member of Glad Tidings church in Lake Charles and is described as not only a great state trooper, but an even greater man.

    Jeff Davis Sheriff's Office detectives arrested a man on charges of indecent behavior with a juvenile Thursday.

    On May 20, deputies were contacted by a sister of the 11-year-old victim. Deputies discovered in the investigation that inappropriate behavior occurred on several dates at an Iowa residence between Alejandro Maldonado Salazar, 41, and a stepdaughter, said the Sheriff's Office.  

    Jeff Davis Sheriff's Office detectives arrested a man on charges of indecent behavior with a juvenile Thursday.

    Many parents are angry after finding out there is a chance their child might not be able to attend pre-kindergarten for the upcoming school year. 

    A family's income has to be below 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines to be accepted into a pre-K program with Calcasieu Parish Schools. 

    Unfortunately, many families who applied didn't meet those requirements, and have received a letter saying they've been wait listed.

    Three Beauregard Parish Sheriff's deputies have resigned rather than being fired, Sheriff Ricky Moses said. Moses said the three corrections officers violated departmental policy.     A vehicle crashed into a home near the intersection of Cline and Malcolm streets around midday Friday. It's the third similar incident this week. A car crashed into a bedroom of a home.     A Moss Bluff man arrested in connection to a shooting at Moss Bluff Elementary returned to jail last week after initially bonding out on charges of negligent injuring and improper supervision of a minor. The Calcasieu Sheriff's Office confirmed Michael Dugas bonded out on Thursday, May 18th on charges connected to the shooting.
