    The fatal shooting of an 18-year-old soldier at Fort Polk is now a criminal investigation. Private Jacob Malcolm of Hedgesville, West Virginia, was fatally shot on April 12 in a residence at the base. Kim Reischling, spokeswoman for the U.S. Army's Criminal Investigation Command, says that the gunshot wound was not self-inflicted.     A Ragley woman was sentenced today for stealing more than $75,000 of her deceased mother-in-law's VA benefits.  Vanneta Hudspeth, 57, pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government funds back in Feb. of 2018.  Hudspeth continued to receive her dead mother-in-laws Veterans Affairs benefits from March 2010 to June 2015 that she was not entitled to. She also made false statements on the mail-in questionnaire in 2014 saying that her mother-in-law was still livin

    A pedestrian was struck as a truck backed out of a parking spot at Market Basket on Ryan Street Thursday, authorities said.     Police are blocking La. 110 in order to extract a tanker truck from a ditch.  A tow truck is being used to retrieve the truck from the ditch and police will block La. 110 for at least an hour, says Asst.     Firefighters battled a home on fire in Starks Wednesday afternoon. Ward 5 Fire Chief Brance Sartin said when firefighters arrived at the house on Old River Road, the south side of the home was on fire.  Two minutes, the house was engulfed. The house has no electricity. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.  Firefighters from Ward 7 and DeQuincy also assisted.

    A suspect has been arrested for attempted manslaughter in Fenton last night. Sgt. Vernon O'Quinn of the Fenton Police Department says around 9:30 p.m. yesterday, the suspect shot at the victim at the residence.  The victim is a man and has been injured and taken to the hospital to undergo surgery, O'Quinn says.  KPLC is following the story and will update once we receive more information.  Copyright 2018 KPLC.     Roadways in DeRidder are still being cleared after a log truck and a vehicle crashed, according to Deputy Chief Christoper Rudy with the DeRidder Police Department. The log truck was heading westbound on Shirley Street when the vehicle failed to yield at a stop sign. The truck attempted to avoid hitting the vehicle, but ended up striking the front of the vehicle, said Rudy. There were no injuries in the crash, but several logs are in the roadway.     The search continues for a man with a lengthy criminal history after he disappears into a wildlife refuge. The Evangeline Parish Sheriff's Office says deputies were attempting to stop a vehicle on Saturday, driven by Samuel Lee in Ville Platte.  After a pursuit, Lee and a woman got out of the car and ran into a wildlife refuge.     A single vehicle crash in Vernon parish claims the life of a Bunkie man.  Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to the scene on Highway 28 near Highway 121, Tuesday afternoon. Investigators say, 54-year-old Lindsey Laborde was driving an 18-wheeler loaded with logs when he lost control and struck several trees. The truck's cab became engulfed in flames.   Laborde was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.

    A man has barricaded himself inside his home on Highway 90 west of Lacassine, according to Chris Ivey with Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office. Ivey said US Marshals were attempting to serve a warrant on a man when he barricaded himself.     A suspect in a homicide in the Starks area has been transported to Calcasieu Parish. Ashlyn Renee Brown, 23, was one of two arrests announced in August 2017 in connection with the death of 22-year-old Houston man Dustin Hammons, whose body was found in the woods near Starks on Aug. 2, 2017.     The owners of Vicki B's have announced they are closing their doors, effective immediately,  Vicki Stahl says the closure comes after they lost their lease on the Lakeshore Drive location.     The left lane of I-10 East on the Calcasieu River Bridge is blocked due to an accident, according to DOTD.     The Town of Kinder will begin turning all of the gas meters back on within the hour, according to Town Clerk Traci Fontenot. Last night's storms caused a natural gas leak, forcing officials to turn off gas. Fontenot said, " It will still take several hours to get all 700 meters turned back on.
