Some parents in Calcasieu Parish are frustrated because of the number of times they say the school bus is late picking up their children on school mornings.

For Olimpia Bellard, a concerned parent with children who go to both S.J. Welsh Middle and Barbe High schools, not having the school bus show up on time is something she said happens too often.

"There's so many times my kids are supposed to be picked up at 6:15 and they're not getting picked up until anywhere between 7:30 and 8 o'clock," Bellard said. "They get to school late and it doesn't look good for them."

Bellard added for some parents in the Gibbs Mobile Home Park on Nelson Road, the school bus is their only way of transportation.

"Sometimes I have to have the school bus pick my kids up." said Amy Young, a parent of two SJ Welsh students.

Young said she's tired of calling the school board about the situation.

"Arguing with the school is like arguing with a brick wall," said Young. "You're not going to get anywhere; they have their policies and procedures."

Bellard and Young say, however, they just want to help.

The school board did issue a statement in response to the upset parents:

"The Calcasieu Parish School Board is aware of this particular situation. This is a personnel issue and is already being handled by the Transportation Department. With the transportation of around 16,000 students daily, the late arrival of buses to our schools can happen for various reasons. However, frequent tardiness on a particular route or of a particular bus will not be tolerated. We have a system in place that closely monitors the arrival time of each bus at our schools. Steps were already being taken to correct this particular situation. In any instance that a bus does arrive late to one of our campuses, students are provided breakfast and are not marked tardy."
