JENNINGS, LA (KPLC) -

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal says a Jennings woman lied about how her 4-year-old niece was burned in order to protect herself.

The incident happened on Jan. 22, but Gail Marie Brown, 29, was arrested late Friday.

Brown initially told investigators that a young boy at a park in Jennings lit the girl's clothing on fire, said State Fire Marshal Brant Thompson. What actually happened, Thompson said, was that Brown's 6-year-old daughter and her 4-year-old niece were left alone in a vehicle when the older child used a lighter to set the younger girl's clothes on fire.

Brown is charged with negligent injuring, prostitution, obstruction of justice, child desertion and false swearing for the purposes of violating public health or safety. She is being held in the Jeff Davis Parish jail.

The 4-year-old is being treated at a pediatric burn unit in Galveston, Texas.
