ALLEN PARISH, LA (KPLC) -

An Allen Parish Sheriff's deputy shot a man Thursday after the suspect fired at the deputy, Sheriff Doug Hebert said.

Hebert said Michael Hidalgo, 47, was shot in the leg and the abdomen after firing at the deputy. Hidalgo was airlifted to Rapides Regional Medical Center.

Hidalgo underwent surgery and is in ICU, Hebert said.

Deputies were responding to a suspicious person call on Langley Camp Road, west of Kinder, when the shooting happened. The suspect had a bench warrant for failure to appear in court.

Hebert said the deputy had to pull out a taser while attempting to arrest Hidalgo. But Hidalgo pulled out a gun and fired upon the deputy, missing the deputy.

The deputy returned fire, striking the suspect twice, Hebert said.

Hebert said deputies were questioning three men at the home. Hidalgo had permission to be at the home, although it was not his.
