Heavy flaring has been reported at the SASOL facility in Westlake.
Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Director Dick Gremillion tells KPLC what looks like flames reaching into the sky is from a ground flare at the SASOL facility. He said an issue with a unit there is causing the excessive flaring, but there is no immediate threat to safety.
Also, reports of chemical odors have come in throughout the day. Gremillion said this is most likely regular emissions from our Southwest Louisiana industries, but because of the high humidity and low wind conditions, those odors are lingering much longer than they normally would.
