BATON ROUGE, LA (KPLC) -
A Baton Rouge teen was shot and killed on his birthday, and the suspect was arrested in Lake Charles on Monday afternoon.
State Police Troop D have released the name of the suspect who is accused of shooting and killing the Baton Rouge 16-year-old.
The suspect is identified as 49-year-old Octavio P. Bringas. He was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center on a second-degree murder warrant, state police said.
"Louisiana State Police has a Fugitive Apprehension Task Force that works with other agencies in the state. We were contacted shortly after this murder. Our Fugitive Task Force alerted Troop D troopers that he may be in our traveling to Mexico. We located this vehicle near I-10 near La. 387. We made the traffic stop inside Lake Charles and he was apprehended with out incident," said Sgt. James Anderson, Troop D spokesman.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office said the shooting at a Baton Rouge apartment on Southpark Drive - they were called there just before 1 p.m. on Monday and found the teen shot in his head.
The teen, identified as Darius Plummer of Baton Rouge, was rushed to a hospital where he died - today is his birthday, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office said.
Troop D said Bringas is believed to be one of the boy's neighbors. He was picked up on I-10 in Lake Charles on Monday. Authorities suspect he was trying to flee the country.
