The project to build an access road for student drop-off at a Lake Charles elementary school will continue but it will cost much more than expected.

The Calcasieu Parish School Board approved an additional $231,000  for the project at Prien Lake Elementary School. The total cost of the road, and a canopy covering a walkway, has risen to more than $640,000, which is more than twice the original bid.

The contractor said more money is needed because of three things - the dirt at Prien Lake Elementary isn't suitable to build a road on, several trees need to be removed and Department of Transportation added more requirements.

A representative for local teachers said the money could be better spent elsewhere.

"I don't see how a road has any academic value to students. I think that money approaching $700,000 could be better spent in making improvements to the buildings our students are in and their academic needs," said Vicky Johnston, president of the Calcasieu Association of Educators.

Because of a $200,000 dollar donation from Lake Charles LNG, the project to build that new student drop-off area at Prien Lake Elementary is still under budget, according to Superintendent Karl Bruchhaus.

School board members approved the additional $231,000 by a vote of 10-5.
