SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA (KPLC) -

The CHRISTUS-St. Patrick Health System's Regional Heart Center has now been renamed to the "John & Sylvia Stelly Regional Heart Center," thanks to a $1.1 million donation from the couple.

“With 40 percent of all deaths in Southwest Louisiana being attributable to cardiovascular disease, we wanted to do something to change that statistic. With this donation, we are happy to ensure that the most advanced technology is available here to care for patients. We also want to bring awareness of the importance of knowing your numbers and striving to improve our health as individuals,” said John Stelly.

The donation was made during the “Healthcare and Hope…Here at Home” fundraising campaign, which began in 2014. During the campaign, donors gave over $12 million toward the purchase of the latest technology for cardiology, neuroscience and oncology.

The donation also helped improve the center's cardiology services, including the development of the first accredited chest pain center with technology. This technology is used to quickly and accurately detect heart attacks and other cardiovascular events. Also in development is the region’s first Hybrid Surgical Suite and the TAVR program. This gift will support both initiatives.

“It is because of their generous donation, and the donations of many others, that we are able to give our patients the most advanced treatments and give them confidence that they are getting the best care possible, here at home," “said CHRISTUS-St. Patrick Foundation Director Kay Barnett.

Other cardiology technology enhancements funded through the fundraising program include a128-slice CT scanner and updated catheterization labs.
