The ancient Chinese tradition of dragon boat racing is returning to the Lake Charles waterfront.
The CHRISTUS St. Patrick Foundation is hosting its fifth annual Dragon Boat Race on Saturday, April 22, at the Lake Charles Civic Center Seawall, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Up to 30 teams of paddlers will race 41-foot boats resembling Chinese dragons - a nod to a 2000-year-old Chinese folk ritual - to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network (CMN) at CHRISTUS St. Patrick Hospital.
The race is the hospital's biggest annual fundraiser for the CMN, said Cara Wyland, CHRISTUS St. Patrick Foundation’s CMN Director.
Along with raising money, the free event is meant to promote community health, and will feature family activities that encourage good nutrition and healthy lifestyles. There will also be plenty of food, drinks, and music.
“It’s a time when the generosity, competitive spirit and family-oriented nature of this community come together to make a huge difference for the kids of Southwest Louisiana," said Wyland. "On top of that, it’s huge fun!”
