SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA (KPLC) -

Around 60 officers from the Probation and Parole offices of Lake Charles, Lafayette, Leesville, and Ville Platte - along with officers from the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center Chase Team, and deputies from the Calcasieu and Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff's Departments - hit the streets before the crack of dawn on Thursday.

They were split up into five teams consisting of around 10 officers and went house to house in search of convicted felons who had violated their probation or parole supervision.

"For unknown reasons, it could be because they started to re-engage in criminal activity, but they have absconded. And then our mandate is to find them and take them out for circulation," said Leland Hughes, supervisor for the Dept. of Public Safety and Corrections in the Parole or Probation Division.

Out of the 50 warrants, there were 14 arrests.

Four had been arrested a few days before the sweep and 10 were arrested on Thursday.

"We consider 14 out of 50 to actually be very successful, and one of the reasons for that is that these people do not want to be found, and they've had some time to prepare themselves to not be found. They live a very transit lifestyle. They get kicked out of the home and bounce from friend to friend and so forth, and so it's very difficult to pin them down to one spot," he said.

Currently, there are over 400 warrant cases in the Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jeff Davis Parishes - a number Hughes wants to see reduced.

Some of the crimes of those being searched for include manslaughter, battery, distribution and possession of drugs, as well as burglary and theft.

Hughes says it's important to make sure they get these people off the streets for the public's safety and hopes they will come forward on their own.

"We are out. We are going to be coming looking for them. If they were lucky to not get a knock on their door this morning, there's one coming," he said.

They hope to conduct another warrant roundup like this morning's in the near future.

Those arrested were booked into the Calcasieu and Jefferson Davis parish prisons.

Acadian Ambulance provided paramedic teams to assist with any medical needs.
