The first day of school is right around the corner and many organizations are holding back-to-school events and supply drives to get everyone ready.

SUPPLY GIVEAWAYS

  • The Collaboration for a Cause school supply giveaway will be held Saturday, July 29 from 12 to 2 p.m. at the MLK Community Center, located at 4000 Gus Young Ave. There will be free school supplies, free food, guest speakers, and music by DJ Choppa. Donations and sponsors are still needed. For more information, call 225-931-8155.
  • The Fishing for Backpacks School Supply Event will be held Saturday, July 29 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Waddill Wildlife Refuge, located at 4142 N Flannery Rd. in Baton Rouge. 
  • The Tau Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,  Inc., will host it's annual Back to School supply giveaway on Saturday,  July 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the City of Plaquemine Activity Center (COPAC).
  • The Cars for Kids Back 2 School Car Show and Supply Giveaway will be held Sunday, July 30 from 12 to 6 p.m. at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center, located at 9039 S St. Landry Ave. in Gonzales. Registration for the event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with judging at 4 p.m. and the trophy presentation at 6 p.m. Backpacks and school supplies will be given away from 2 to 4 p.m. There will also be door prizes given away on the hour, every hour. Vehicle registration is $20 outside and $30 for inside.
  • The Line 4 Line Back to School Giveaway will be held Sunday, July 30 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at O'Neil's Barber & Beauty Salon, which is located at 449 North Acadian Thruway in Baton Rouge. There will be free supplies, backpacks, uniforms, books, haircuts, and food. There will also be inflatables, art, activities, and more.
  • It’s All About Us Trailride Association will be hosting its first annual Back to School Giveaway on Sunday, July 30, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Smith Ponderosa Grounds, located at 281 W Plain Port Hudson Rd. in Zachary. The event will have free food, music, and school supplies. Five free hair styles and haircuts will be provided. There will be a water slide onsite, but guests are encouraged to bring a towel. Kids must be present to receive school supplies. For more information, contact Cassandra Spurlock at 225-286-3112.
  • The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Zachary committee is hosting its annual Back-to-School Supply Giveaway on Saturday, August 5 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Zachary High School gym, located at 4100 Bronco Ln. There will also be entertainment, food, photo IDs, and fingerprinting. For more information, call 225-933-6431 or 225-202-1076.
  • Rock the Halls Livingston Parish School Uniform Drive will be held August 5. Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation to buy new uniforms can send the tax deductible donations to: 9270 Cockerham Rd., Denham Springs, LA, 70726. Uniform donations can be dropped off at several locations.   • Livingston Parish Assessor Jeff Taylor, local volunteers and area businesses are teaming up again with ASSESS THE NEED to provide school supplies for students in Livingston Parish. Volunteers will be outside parish Walmart stores August 5-6, to collect monetary donations and supplies. Taylor said volunteers wearing ASSESS THE NEED t-shirts will take donations for this year’s drive from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 5-6 at the three Walmart stores in Livingston Parish - located in Denham Springs, Walker, and Watson. He said volunteers will accept monetary and in-kind donations, although he noted that monetary donations allow organizers to purchase more supplies in bulk quantities. Donations also can also be mailed to Assess the Need, P. O. Box 1802, Denham Springs, LA 70727, given online at www.AssesstheNeed.com, or dropped off at the Livingston Parish Assessor’s office in the Town of Livingston during regular work hours, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
  • BRAVE will host an event on Saturday, August 12 at the Family and Youth Services Center on Government St. in Baton Rouge. The event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. They will be giving away backpacks and school supplies. 

EVENTS:

  • Bodystyle Personal Fitness and the Healthy Kids, Healthy Families Wellness Initiative is hosting a Back to School Children's Wellness Day on Saturday, August 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bodystyle Personal Fitness Wellness Facility, located at 11137 Muriel Ave. Children entering the 2017-18 school year can receive free health, dental, hearing, and vision screenings at the event.   • Back to School Bash at Ragusa's Deli at 6525 Greenwell Street in Baton Rouge on Saturday, August 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be school supplies, uniforms, performances, food, games, and more.
